HVAC FAQs

Quick answers to common questions. If you don’t see what you need, contact us and we’ll help.

What are your most common HVAC job types in Durango?

Service is a large part of what we do, followed by new construction installation, replacement equipment and preventative maintenance.

What heating systems do you work on (furnaces, boilers, etc.)?

We work on all types of forced air furnaces, wall heaters, console heaters including gas/ propane and electric.

Do you service/replace central AC only, or also other cooling setups?

We service, install, repair/ replace all types of central/ unitary cooling equipment including samp coolers, ductless split systems through the wall units (not window units).

Mini splits / ductless

Do you install mini splits in both residential and commercial?

We install both residential and commercial mini splits.

What are the most common reasons customers choose ductless in your area?

The most common reason for installing a ductless split system is in a home without central heat, followed by area/ spot cooling, or trying to get away from gas heating.

Heat pumps

Do you install heat pumps as a primary heat source, backup, or both?

Heat pumps are typically installed as a primary heat source if they are cold climate certified. Otherwise they are used for shoulder season heating, typically down to around 25 degrees depending on the equipment.

Any notes about suitability for our local climate/elevation?

Heat pumps are a great option for our climate but again, they should be cold climate certified.

Humidification

What humidification services do you provide?

We service all types of humidifiers. We only install steam humidifiers.

Preventative maintenance

Do you offer maintenance agreements?

Yes.

What’s included and how often are visits?

Maintenance visits include cleaning/ replacing filters, greasing/ oiling motors/ bearings, checking/ adjustion belts, and seasonal operation check of units. ie, flame sensors, condensate drains.

Service area & scheduling

What is your service area?

Our service area includes La Plata, Archuleta, Dolores, Montezuma, San Juan counties in Colorado, in other words from the New Mexico state line to Silverton and from Pagosa Springs to Cortez and surrounding areas.

Which major towns are in your service area?

What is your typical lead time for maintenance/service calls

We strive to keep lead/ response times to within 24 hours

What is your typical lead time for new installs/replacements

Typically within 2 weeks, but highly dependent on equipment availability. Emergency replacements are usually done within 48 hours.

Do you offer after-hours or emergency HVAC service?

Yes. No heat, restaurant exhaust systems are the only real emergency services that qualify. We have emergency numbers on our answering machine.

Line-hide covers

Do you fabricate line-hide covers in-house?

We offer pre-fabricated PVC type covers, as well as custom sheet metal covers fabricated in-house.

Why do you recommend line-hide covers?

Covers are included on most exposed lineset installations mainly to hide for appearance, but protection is an added benefit.

Where can line-hide covers be installed?

Anywhere they are visually exposed and the customer does not want to see them

What line-hide cover color/finish options you offer?

PVC type has limited color options. Metal covers have standard roof metal colors as well as custom rusted metal. Paintlock is also available for customers to have custom painted.

Why us

Why use Cal Steel & Sheet Metal?

What HVAC certifications/licenses/registrations do you have?

Our president and our service manager both have an AAS for HVAC service. All of our techs have a Universal EPA license, as well as numerous certifications for servicing/ installing Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Lennox and Trane. We have a certified duct leakage tester and will soon be certified for blower door testing.

Are there specific equipment brands you install/service that you’re authorized for?

We service all brands of equipment. We are an authorized Lennox, Trane and Mitsubishi Diamond dealer.

Do you offer workmanship warranties?

Workmanship is guaranteed for a minimum of 1 year, but can be extended.

Free estimates

Are free estimates for all HVAC jobs?

Yes

Do you do on-site estimates only, or can you ballpark by phone with photos?

Estimates are only given after either a site visit or via plans. No over the phone estimates are given.

Service call fees: Do you charge diagnostic/service-call fees?

We charge an hourly rate plus a travel charge.

When do you recommend replacing instead of repairing?

Repair if age x cost of repair is less than $5,000.00. Replace if inefficient, requires frequent repairs or is a safety hazard or repair is more than $5,000.00.

What maintenance do you recommend homeowners do vs leave to a tech?

We tell homeowners to make frequent filter changes. There is nothing in the equipment that should be serviced by the homeowner.

Ductless split systems

Do you install ductless AC (mini splits) and heat pumps?

Yes. We provide mini split system and heat pump installation and service, including ductless AC systems (mini splits).

What should customers expect regarding noise and comfort with a ductless split system?

Most mini splits are barely noticed while running. Their dba levels are usually below everyday conversations.

Do your HVAC installs require permits locally, and do you handle them?

Permits/ inspections are typically only used/ performed on new construction.
